Ack! I'm working on a story that requires the characters to follow unicorn blood, and I just found out that the night Harry, Draco, etc. served detention, and were following the unicorn blood by moonlight (and seeing centaurs, etc.) ---
according to HP Lexicon for date, and a moon phase calendar....
IT WAS A NEW MOON! Dark Night! No moon!
*wimpers...*
(relooks at calendar, sees it was set to 2006, flips it to 1992, and a quarter moon - plenty enough moonlight...)
Erm, Never mind......*embarassed, slinks off stage left*
*finds another calendar...*
Great, moonrise was@ 2 a.m., with setting @ 7 p.m.
*Thinks some more, and realizes that there may be a plot bunny in all this mess...* |

JKR did not pay attention to the actual phases of the moon as she was writing. Thus, if you try to look up what they would have been, they may or may not match the story.
For instance, the occurences of the full moons during book 3 don't really add up.
One detail she did get right is that a full moon rises at sunset. Thus, Lupin leaving for the Shrieking Shack afterwards wouldn't work....so she made it cloudy. It is the clouds moving away from the full moon that does him in, not the rising of the full moon. For what it's worth....
This doesn't mean that you can't pay attention to such details, but it does mean that you shouldn't get too upset with yourself if it doesn't work. |

Thanks. I'm working on a canon-compliant chapter that takes place at the dead unicorn time in the PS book, and needed to know if there was any moonlight the week before....
(Now I'm also grooming a BASS plot bunny ("Because Anne Said So", from the Pern series...)) The cloudy moon bit is a BJSS...

I am very interested in reading the crossover with Pern story.
I was introduced to the Chronicles of Pern last summer and read quite a few of them (about 10-15) during the summer hols. I really enjoyed them a lot and I think that this will most likely be a definate gem.
Please keep us (ME) posted on your progress.
Thanks,

Thanks for the encouragement! Anne McCaffery has a web-site. (Gaugh, she looks awful after that spill...) Anyway, she has a list of rules about her fan fics. Fanfiction.net has a site for hers, but that's the only one I'm aware of, since she took down her forum a few years ago...*still missing it* |
